Number of Children Born via Surrogacy in the UK Triples in the last 5 years

The number of children being born through surrogacy has almost tripled in the last three years in the UK.

An increasing number of high-profile people have been helped in this way to become parents, including supermodel Tyra Banks, whose “miracle baby” was born in January 2016, actress Lucy Liu, and singer Elton John and his husband David Furnish.

Earlier this month, Emma, Viscountess Weymouth, and Ceawlin, Viscount Weymouth, announced that their son, Henry Richard Isaac, was born by surrogate. The Viscountess suffered from a brain illness in her first pregnancy and had been warned that carrying a second child herself could prove life threatening.

But the figures suggest that people from all walks of life who are unable to have children are using this method, where a woman uses her womb to carry the child, and passes it over to the intended parent or parents at birth.
